Thoughts on the Book

So I’ve finally managed to squeeze this in to my reading list. The book started in the part where it nears the ending. Somehow it added appeal to the book. It made me wonder what really happened between the characters. At first, I was angry at Matt for dumping Katie but his actions were justified by the diary he sent to her.

KATE WILKINSON. She’s a ravishing six-foot tall beauty. She’s a woman who is never hard to miss even when she’s a part of the crowd. What adds to her magic is the fact that she doesn’t believe she is beautiful. She’s a successful woman. She works as a publisher in a publishing firm. She’s also a good cook and a great carpenter. She met Matthew Harrison at the publishing firm. I guess it was love at first sight for her. She instantly fell in the whirlwind of romance. They share the same interest. She felt at ease with him. She’s so comfortable with him that she can talk about anything to him. Everyone expected them to end up in marriage. The night she prepared a special dinner for him to deliver good news, Matt decided to break up with her. She was so devastated that she didn’t know what to do. After how many days she received a diary. Matt sent it to her to explain his sudden break up with her.

THE DIARY. The diary was entitled Suzanne’s Diary to Nicholas. It turned out to be the diary of Matt’s late wife, Suzanne, to their son Nicholas. It narrates Suzanne’s life before she met Matt and also during their marriage life. I don’t know how Katie managed to finish reading this. It was so heart breaking to read something or to be transported to a time when the one you loved was so in love with someone else. The diary was so full of love and magic and it would make me feel giddy sometimes. I love Matt and Suzanne’s tandem – How exactly they fit into each other’s arms, how Suzanne accepted Matt for who he was and also how Matt took in Suzanne’s condition. The arrival of their son only added more color to their lives. They were a picture of a perfect family. Suzanne’s heart condition only made Matt loved her more. He took care of her and always arranged surprise getaway vacation for them. He always gives her gifts. He was so sweet – a perfect husband and father indeed. He diary ended with Matt writing a letter for his son Nicholas.

MATT. I love him. He’s the epitome of a family man. He’s a very dedicated husband and father. I just wish that there’s still a guy like him who exist in the real world. I knew he had issues. He has a trauma because he thinks that everyone he loves leaves him. He had a hard time coping up with that so I was very glad when he finally found the courage to face his fears to create a future with his new found love, - Katie.

What I love about this book is that it wasn’t only focussed on love alone. It also gives us a warning to those very successful people who always put work first in their minds. It reminds us to value ourselves more because there are other more important things in life other than work – family, health, friends, and integrity. These are precious glass balls and when one of those balls breaks, it won’t ever be the same again.

Quotable Quotes

"Imagine life is a game in which you are juggling five balls. The balls are called work, family, health, friends, and integrity. And you're keeping all of them in the air. But one day you finally come to understand that work is a rubber ball. If you drop it, it will bounce back. The other four balls--family, health, friends, integrity--are made of glass. If you drop one of these, it will be irrevocably scuffed, nicked, perhaps even shattered. And once you truly understand the lesson of the five balls, you will have the beginnings of balance in your life."
"Good memories are like charms. Each is special. You collect them, one by one, until one day you look back and discover they make a long, colorful bracelet."

"When it's true, when it's right, love can give you the kind of joy that you can't get from any other experience."

Matt’s Poem to Suzanne

You are the explosion of carnations

in a dark room.
Or the unexpected scent of pine
miles from Maine.
You are a full moon
that gives midnight its meaning.
And the explanation of water
For all living things.
You are a compass,
a sapphire,
a bookmark.
A rare coin,
a smooth stone,
a blue marble.
You are an old lore,
a small shell,
a saved silver dollar.
You are a fine quartz,
a feathered quill,
and a fob from a favorite watch.
You are a valentine
tattered and loved and reread a hundred times.
You are a medal found in the drawer
of a once sung hero.
You are honey
and cinnamon
and West Indies spices,
lost from the boat
that was once Marco Polo's.
You are a pressed rose,
a pearl ring,
and a red perfume bottle found near the Nile.
You are an old soul from an ancient place,
a thousand years, and centuries and
millenniums ago.
And you have traveled all this way
just so I could love you.
I do.
